Configuring Windows95 for use with Demon Internet LTD (PAB) =========================================================== ** Don't forget to read the file readme.1st! ** Information You Need to Know Before You Start ============================================= A. Your Nodename This is the 4-8 character name you chose when you joined Demon Internet LTD. You may have heard it expressed in the form yournode.demon.co.uk, which forms part of your email address, expressed as your_name@yournode.demon.co.uk e.g. paul@sample.demon.co.uk where 'sample' is the Nodename. B. Your Password When your Nodename was added to the Demon system, you should have called any of our PoPs using a standard communications package and entered your Nodename at the login prompt. You should then have been asked to choose a password and been given the next piece of information you need to know: C. Your IP Address This is obtained just after you set the password for your account. It is a set of four numbers seperated by full stops (sometimes called a 'dotted quad') and will look something like : 158.152.x.y where x and are numbers specific to your Nodename e.g. sample.demon.co.uk has the IP address 158.152.168.71 . It is very important that you have the correct IP address. Setting up your modem in Windows 95 First of all, you will need to tell Windows95 that you have a modem attached, and which type of modem it is. Ensure that your modem is plugged in and switched on. If you have not moved the Windows95 Taskbar, you should see the icon labelled START on the grey bar at the bottom left hand corner of the screen. Click the left mouse button on the START icon. A menu with more icons will appear, and one of these will be called SETTINGS, move the mouse pointer over the settings icon, and you will see another menu appear, containing an icon called CONTROL PANEL, move the mouse over this icon, and click the left mouse button. The control panel folder will appear with many icons being displayed. Look for the icon labelled MODEMS, and click the left mouse button twice on this icon. You will then be presented with a dialogue box, with the title "Install new modem". There is a tick box with the text "Don't detect my modem, I will select it from a list" to the right, ensure that you have not placed a tick in this box, if you see a tick mark click the left mouse button on the tick box to remove the tick. Click the left mouse button on the button labelled NEXT at the bottom of the "Install new modem" dialogue box. Windows95 will now attempt to detect the communications port that modem is connected to, and the type of modem attached. The automatic detection in Windows95 appears to work when determining which communications port the modem is attached to, but doesn't appear to be very good when detecting the type of modem attached (for example it detected a British sportster 28800 modem as a Swedish one!). If your modem has been detected correctly click the left mouse button on the NEXT button at the bottom of the dialogue box, and skip the next paragraph of this document. If your modem was NOT detected correctly, click the left mouse button on the button labelled CHANGE, and you will be presented with a list of manufacturers on the left hand side, and a list of modem types on the right hand side of the screen. Select the manufacturer of your modem from the left hand box, and the correct modem type from the right hand box, by scrolling through the entries using the scrollbars, and clicking the left mouse button on the appropriate entries. If your modem manufacturer/type is not listed, choose the option titled STANDARD MODEM TYPES and select the appropriate baud rate for your modem (this should be listed in the modem manual or on the box the modem came in) from the selections on the right hand side, then click on the button marked NEXT at the bottom of the dialogue box. Next you will be presented with a dialogue box asking what country you are in, what area code you are in and if you need an access code to dial an outside line (such as 9 when dialling from some offices). Enter the correct information in these boxes, by selecting them with the left mouse button and typing into the white boxes, then click the left mouse button on one of the radio buttons near the bottom of the dialogue box to choose between Tone dialling or Pulse Dialling as appropriate. Click on the NEXT button, and when presented with the next screen, click on the button labelled FINISH. You will then be presented with panel titled "Modems Properties", and you should see a highlighted icon representative of the modem you have selected. Click on the PROPERTIES button, and a new panel will appear showing the properties specific to your modem. There is a pull down menu which is titled "Maximum speed", ensure that this is set to the maximum speed that your computer and modem can communicate at. A rough guide to setting the maximum speed is as follows : Modem Speed Serial Port Speed (Maximum Speed in the diagram below) 96,00 19200 14,400 57600 28,800 115200 Whether your serial port will function at greater than 19,200 baud depends on whether your serial port has a 16550 uart. A lot of computers only have 8250 uarts and will encounter problems when you set the serial port speed higher than 19200. To check what type of uart your computer has, open the MS-DOS prompt, and type in msd - this will run Microsoft Diagnostics, and when you are presented with a page of options press C for com ports. You will see a table showing all of your serial ports and the type of uart used. If you have a 16550 uart then you should use the port speeds recommended above, if you have an 8250 uart then do not set your serial speed higher than 19,200. If you have a 16450 uart you may be able to set the speed to 38400 maximum. If your modem is faster than 14,400 and you only have an 8250 uart I would advise getting a high speed serial card to replace your existing serial port(s), as you will not be getting the most out of your modem. However if you have a 14,400 modem and are running it with no problems at 19,200 then transfer speeds should be quite acceptable. If you have an internal modem the chances are it has a 16550 uart or emulation of, built in and you should be able to set the speed to 115,200. Click on the CONNECTION tab at the top of the panel, you will see some more drop down menus, DATA BITS should be set to 8, PARITY should be set to NONE, and STOP BITS should be set to 1, if any of these three values are different, you can change them by clicking on the small down arrow at the right of each option bar. Click on the ADVANCED button, ensure that there is a tick in the USE FLOW CONTROL tick box, and that the selected radio button is the one labelled "Hardware (RTS/CTS)". The "Modulation type" option should be set to Standard. Click on the panel labelled "Extra settings" and enter the correct initialisation string for your modem, if you do not have an initialisation string, have a look at the file modem.txt (included with this document) which should help you in obtaining one. Should you wish, click on the tick box titled "Record a log file" which will keep a log called modemlog.txt in your windows directory, this could be useful if you run into problems later on. Click on the OK button, which will return you to the properties panel. Click on the OK button again, which will return you to the Modems Properties panel again. Click on the CLOSE button. Configuring The Dial-Up Networking Adapter & TCP/IP =================================================== Open the control panel (START button, SETTINGS, CONTROL PANEL) as before. Click the left mouse button on the ADD/REMOVE PROGRAMS icon, and then click on the WINDOWS SETUP tab near the top of the panel which is displayed. If you are successful then you should also be able to run the Microsoft Internet Explorer if you have it. Automating The Login Process ============================ With this help file you should have the file dscrpt.exe which contains the Microsoft scripting software for windows95. Open up a dos session (START, PROGRAMS, MS-DOS PROMPT) and change to the directory where you first ran the self-extracting archive which contained this document and type in dscrpt which should extract the files needed to automate the login process. Once the files have been extracted, close the dos window. Open the control panel (START, SETTINGS, CONTROL PANEL), and double click on the ADD/REMOVE PROGRAMS icon, click on the WINDOWS SETUP tab, click on the HAVE DISK button, and a new panel titled "install from disk" should appear. Click on the BROWSE button and select the directory which contains the dscrpt.exe file, and you should click on the file RNAPLUS.INF if it is not already highlighted. Click on the OK button and you will be returned to the "install from disk panel", click on OK, and a new panel titled "Have disk" will appear, with a section titled "Components" and an icon titled SLIP AND SCRIPTING FOR DIAL-UP NETWORKING, click on the tick box to the left of the icon, so that a tick is displayed. Click on the INSTALL button. You will then be returned to the ADD/REMOVE PROGRAMS panel, and then click on the OK button. You should now find that you have a DIAL-UP SCRIPTING TOOL in the ACCESSORIES group, but first, run the NOTEPAD program (START/PROGRAMS/ACCESSORIES/NOTEPAD). Load the file demon.scp which was included with this document, into notepad, go to notepad's EDIT menu, click on SELECT ALL, go to the EDIT menu again and select COPY. Now close notepad. Click on the START BUTTON, move the mouse over PROGRAMS then ACCESSORIES, and you should see the DIAL-UP SCRIPTING TOOL icon, which you should then click. The "Dial-Up Scripting Tool" panel should then be displayed, where you should see a list of connections on the left hand side, of which your Demon Internet LTD connection should be highlighted. In the right hand box type in the filename demon.scp and then click on the EDIT button. You should then see a warning box with a message stating that the file cannot be found, asking if you wish to create a new file. Click on the YES button and notepad will be loaded. From the EDIT menu click on PASTE which will paste the script into notepad. look for the line which reads : transmit "TYPE YOUR NODENAME IN HERE, INSTEAD OF THIS SENTENCE." Using our Nodename of sample, this line would then become : transmit "sample" Now look for the line which reads : transmit "TYPE YOUR PASSWORD IN HERE, INSTEAD OF THIS SENTENCE." which using the same example for our Nodename of sample would become : transmit "123abcde" if we had set the password for sample to '123abcde'. Obviously you will use your own Nodename, and the password you have set. Once you have changed these details, go to the FILE menu and select SAVE. Then close notepad. You will be returned to the scripting tool panel, ensure that the tick box titled "Start terminal screen minimized" does not have a tick - if this is ticked you will not be able to see the login process working. Click on the APPLY button then click on the CLOSE button. Now that we have an automated script, we no longer wish to use a terminal window after dialling, because the Windows95 scripting is going to login for us! Click on the START button, move the mouse over the PROGRAMS icon, and then the ACCESSORIES icon, and click on the DIAL-UP NETWORKING FOLDER. Click the RIGHT mouse button on the Demon Internet LTD icon and click on PROPERTIES word , click on the CONFIGURE button on the panel which is displayed, click on the OPTIONS TAB near the top of the screen, and make sure that the "BRING UP TERMINAL WINDOW AFTER DIALLING" and "BRING UP TERMINAL WINDOW BEFORE DIALLING" are both NOT ticked. Click on OK which returns you to the previous panel and then click on OK again. Now when you click on the Demon Internet LTD icon in the Dial-Up Networking folder, you can click on the CONNECT button, and your computer will dial your nearest PoP and login to the system automatically. Once connected you should finally see a box displayed on the screen with your connection status & time. You can now run any Winsock compliant applications that you may have e.g. Netscape, Ws_ftp etc. - END -
